Woodhaven School was formed by a small group of parents in 1994 that wanted to create a nurturing environment for their young children. The six founding families envisioned a haven that embraced the wonder of childhood, encouraged boundless imagination, and supported the unhurried, open spirit of a child.
The parents were drawn to the principles of Waldorf education, so they borrowed certain elements - a soothing nest-like environment, oral storytelling, hand and finger play, drama, songs, natural toys, and wholesome, organic foods. They adopted a media-free environment and incorporated annual events that focused on nature - The Lantern Walk in the fall, the Spiral Walk in the winter, and the May Day Celebration in the spring.
